new year, new slate

December 31, 2014

Happy New Year everyone! Now I don’t necessarily believe in resolutions, but I do believe in putting out intentions. And with this year ending similarly to last December (starting from scratch in a new apartment) a fresh setting is all the prompting I need to reflect on the past year and the future ahead. While these photos are not indicative of New Year’s Eve, it is everything I strive for in the next year: Embracing the skin I’m in,  living minimally (materially speaking) but living at a maximum.

Last Christmas my mom started a new tradition of writing down our New Year’s intentions. We had to list 5 goals we wanted to accomplish in the new year on a card. We then threw these cards into a box, forgot about them, and revisited them 365 days later. Out of the 5 I wrote down, I accomplished one, and that’s with the generous exception that I’m still in the process of working towards it. It’s not that I haven’t been busy, if anything, I’ve bitten off more than I can chew. As jarring as it was to see my unmet goals reduced to a piece of paper devoid of the satisfactory check mark, it made me realize a few things that have been percolating in the last six months. If 21 represented a year of turbulence and a test of my comfort zone, 22 has been a lesson on learning to be comfortable in my own skin.

This year I want to put out the intention to simplify and stabilize my life. It’s been a process that takes some exercising, whether it’s a more thoughtful approach to consumerism (needing less, doing more) reserving time for myself to recharge, and spending quality time screen-free. What do you guys want to work on in the new year?
